What, exactly, do you mean by "external directory"?

What does the documentation say about directory specification?

From where are you getting these questions? And what is the motivation for asking?

This question was asked in interview.
And what answer did you give? And what discussion resulted?

And what did you find when you consulted the documentation, as I suggested on Friday - five days ago?

Sometimes you have to infer the answer.
From the 12c Utilities manual:

DIRECTORY

Default: DATA_PUMP_DIR

Purpose

Specifies the default location to which Export can write the dump file set and the log file.

Notice that it has a default value? Might that then mean that even if you do not supply this parameter then expdp will supply its own? Might that further mean that there is no way to get around the use - explicit or implicit - of an "external directory"?

Personally, if I had been asked that question, I would have challenged the use of the term "external directory". It has no meaning in the Oracle world. The correct term (if this is indeed what they are getting at) is "directory object".

And don't dismiss the possibility that some questions are designed to determine if you can spot a fallacy. And some questions are designed to see if you have the confidence to push back.

And occasionally the interviewer doesn't actually know what they're talking about.
