My Senior dba installed oracle 10g in suse linx 9.3, how to

check oracle available or not in suse linz 9.3 ?

Which command we use in suse linux 9.3 ?

You might try to connect to SQL*Plus (command is the same as anywhere else: SQLPLUS username/password@database_alias); I also believe there *must* be something like "Administrative Tools - Services" on MS Windows which would show whether Oracle service is up or not.

to see if the database is running do a ps -ef|grep pmon

Hi Frank,

Implemented nightly backup routines which include database exports, disk backup and copying database files to the development server for precautionary measures.

The above one is, one of the reponsibilty, i don't know why taking disk backup's this is necessary ?

Disk backup saves all your operating system files - forms, reports, SQLs, text documents, spreadsheets, pictures, movies, ..., including Oracle files (database + control + redo log + executables + ...).

Is it necessary? Well, would you like to lose your application which has several hundreds of forms and reports? I wouldn't.

One more thing ? 40 GB database size, How long take backup time ?

we are use win 2003 Server OS, XEON machine, 4 GB Ram, 3 Ghz ..

I've seen your question already; there's no need to send private messages.

I don't know how long it takes. What is your backup media? A tape? If so, read this device's specification. Also, if you do the backup to another disk, it should be faster if compared to a tape. You mentioned a "development server" - are you going to copy image of your production server to another one? Or, will you copy the backup file(s) over the network? This solution will also depend on network traffic.

Whichever it is, I really can't tell "it will last x hours and y minutes".
